Prilosec and timing???

by KJCRUSADE2, Jul 30, 2009 02:21PM
I still haven't been able to diagnose my problems yet but I'm doing some experiments, Im taking prilosec 2x a day under the advice of my doc and I havent really been taking them 30 min before eating, I have taken them once in the morning (any time, I maybe would eat 2 hrs later!) and one in the evening. It hasn't seemed to be working at all, so my question is could my timing be part of the reason its not working or does timing really not effect it all that much?? Thanks you.

Hi and welcome to the Gerd forum.

Timing is very important....how long have u been on the prilosec?
Also, r u on a diet and lifestyle changes to aid the meds?

Plus it is possible that these meds which r PPI's may not work for u....give it time tho,....it can take a couple of weeks to see improvement.U may want to include OTC meds like Maalox....until this flare calms down.

Diet is very important too!! Dairy can really mess up ur LES and allow reflux.

Please see MedHelps Health Pages for tips and lists of foods- keep in mind in  a flare safe foods may affect u.....once the flare is under control u may resume the safe foods and only eat the "bad" foods in moderation.

Thank you for your quick response. I've been taking prilosec off and on for 7 months (the length of my mysterious illness)  BUT I've only been taking it 2x a day faithfully for about a little over a week. I've been trying to eat better Examle. No spicy foods, not eating anyting real solid 3 to 4 hours before sleeping except maybe a popcile. Trying to lose weight and exercise and trying to lay off the caffeine and carbonated bevereges(which is extremly hard for me but Im doing it.) I havent been able to nail an actual flare up food, it seems I'm nausous off and on all the time. Weird stool colors (bright yellow, not to be graphic) Some stomach pain, breathing problems off and on (lik sortness of breath) and sinus problems (especially in my eaars )headaches even sometimes muscle spasms!!!  the problem is that the symptoms are soooooo different and I don't  have  insurance to be tested!!!  This has been happening  for 7 months and I am so tired of all of it. I have literally cried myself to sleep MANY of nights.. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Im going to try to straighten out the timing and see if that helps and I have been mixing it with tums but it doesn't seem to be making much of a difference. The nausea is the worst part and the dizziness from my ears.. Thanks for you help I appreciate it. PS Prilosec I'm taking is Prilosec OTC I hope thats okay.

The prilosec OTC may not be the same dosage or strength a Dr might RX.
Ask ur pharmacist what u may do as far as dosage.

Don't forget dairy can slow ur LES.....

and that bacteria can cause alot of these issues too...ask to be checked for H.Pylori.
