Prolonged Sore Throat

My daughter is 11 and has had a sore throat throughout the month of January 2014. She was given antibiotics about mid December for strep throat though no strep test was done...I took her to another doctor early January and they did a strep test and it must have been negative because they only contact if positive... I've been doing home remedies, it has gradually gotten better but she still has much discomfort even now... Can anyone shed any light on this situation?... she did have other symptoms for a reasonable amount of time such as low fever tiredness but those have passed except she still gets tired at times...any suggestions would be appreciated... I do plan to take her back to a doctor

Oh...well u deff need to get her to a Dr to make sure it is not some sort of infection, but like I said antibiotics can make an acid stomach worse and u can have a sore throat as a result....

I do not know how ur medical system works, but if  u can get her to  a gastro intestinal Dr that would be best....

I'm not sure about the Dr. as what she would be considered bc i live in Canada... but my daughter had a reaction to the antibiotics so i will resume home remedies until i can find her a better Dr. to take her to...her throat is actually worse now ...she does tend to get an acidic stomach...

I know that antibiotics can cause reflux and GERD symptoms to flare...

May I ask is this a GI  Dr or a PCP?.....they should be able to suggest using probiotics once the antibiotics are done to help restore the natural balance of the GI track.

Reflux can cause the throat to be sore....I just am not sure what the cause of the sore throat is...if it is reflux I do not think an antibiotic will help.

I took my daughter to the doctor...she was able to see the same one who diagnosed her with strep...she said there was no way she had a sore throat so shortly after the antibiotics she had given her but i told her it was not a long time at all... she has some infection in her ear and throat still so she put her on Clarithromycin for 10 days... her throat seems to burn now when it hurts and her ear aches, she has been taking it for 3 days... are you aware if this is normal, i'm just curious since she's had a sore throat for so long and many reviews on the antibiotic says their sore throat is better very recent of taking it...

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum,

I am sorry ur DD is dealing with so long and still no answers....frustrating I know.....

First, look to ur families medical history...things like thyroid issues can cause  sore throat and tiredness....

Reflux can also affect us in many ways...try to elevate the head of her bed so it is on an incline...this way if it is acids getting up into her throat, gravity will help keep them down out of there and down where they belong.

Keep a journal of her foods, drinks etc...look at the list of foods to avoid with reflux in the health pages,,, http://www.medhelp.org/health_pages/list?cid=236

Make sure u let the Drs know ALL the symptoms she has had regardless if they are not present now as it may help the Drs pinpoint what is going on,

Wishing u and ur DD all the best...do keep us posted on her progress.
