Protonix for GERD

I have been taking 40 mg. of Protonix daily for GERD, which also has helped my asthma.
My HMO will not cover the cost for Protonix or the generic form.  Can you tell me if OTC Prilosec will have the same efficacy as Protonix?  Thank you for your time.
