Taking Prilosec for more 8 years

I am worried about the side effects of Prilosec after taking the medication for more than 8 years. My Gerd is getting worse and I am considering the operation.

Hi,
Prilosec is a safe medication.
No serious long term complications have been reported with it.
For good response the following should be done -

1. Prilosec should be taken immediately before food
2. If once daily dose is not effective, twice daily dose should be taken
3. In addition to prilosec you should modify your lifestyle ( I have mentioned about it separately below)
4. If in spite of all these you do not get good response, change to some other PPI
5. If still symptoms persists, confirm the diagnosis with 24 hours pH monitoring test and also rule out bile reflux.
6. Surgery is the last resort.

Lifestyle modifications -
1. Head elevation while sleeping
2. Small frequent meals
3. Going to bed 2- 3 hours after food
4. Avoiding bed time snacks
5. Avoiding smoking and alcohol
6. Avoiding tight fitting clothes
7. Avoiding cola, citrus drinks, carbonated drinks, tea, coffee, spicy food
8. Weight reduction
