acid reflux and purple nails??

by mnm1207, Sep 02, 2009 11:08AM
For 2 mths now I have been having wierd symptoms. I have a liquid feeling in my ears and a cough that is getting more frequent. Pain under my ribs and the scariest symptom....purple nails. I have seen 6 dr.s who keep telling me that it's acid reflux. I had an abg test... That was normal. I have been to the er @ least 6 times and they just send me home. My heart has been ruled out. Can acid reflux cause purple nails??? I am so worried and don't know what to do. I am 25 yr old female- non smoker. I have no appetite and don't feel like I have reflux. I have been on medium for 2 wks... Has not helped. Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome to the GERD forum.

The purple nails can be a result of an autoimmune disorder like raynauds.....have u been to a rheumatoid dr?

It is possible that u may also have a autoimmune thyroid issue as well, and that could be the root of ur gerd.

Ask to have tests to rule these out.

I def don't have raynauds. My nails are consistently purple. My thyroid has been checked by tsh....is that the right test? I do have pcos. This cough hurts my chest and liquid in my ear feeling...is that common of reflux?

If u have an autoimmune condition of thyroid disfunction a TSH will come back normal....
so if it is autoimmune u need the TSH, FREE T3, FRRE T 4 and TPO antibodies.

AN ultra sound  of the thyroid would also show nodules......

Were u checked for EDS? Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, I was told I had raynauds and recently was told I had EDS which can have some of the same effects like the blue/purple figernalis...cold hands and feet ect.....even the pcos affecting ur hormones can have an effect on ur circulation.

Have u been to an ENT dr?

Thanks for all the info. I never really thought about my thyroid because they kept saying my tsh was normal. I am just worried because I am so young and I really don't feel good. Everything I look up about purple nails is bad... Lung or heart. I am not even sure I have acid reflux since the nexium is not working.

It is possible that nexium is not the right med for u.....ask ur dr if there is another med u can take.....nexium is a PPI (proton pump inhibator) ask about H2 blockers..or HII......
How often do u have ur TSH checked......my endo told me today that with an autoimmune thyroid issue the TSH can change btwn visits and testing. So, u should call ur dr when the symptoms r acting up so they can check then.
