I am 55 and was diagnosed with GERD 12 years ago. Until recently, my symptoms have been well conntrolled with medication (Pantoprazole 40mg twice daily and domperidone) and lifestyle modications. I have avoided most problematic foods (onions, garlic, citrus , caffeine, carbonated beverages, chocolate, mint and spicy items).
About 3 months ago I started to experience what I consider to be IBS symptoms; bloating, cramps and lots of gas. The discomfort ocurred much lower down than my typical GERD symptoms do. I went to a naturopath and after several tests, she determined that I am allergic/sensitive to wheat, dairy, apples and a whole lot of vegetables. She has suggested that my problems stem from hypochloridia (low stomach acid) as a result of long term ppi use. In the last 2 weeks my GERD symptoms have returned with a vengeance. This coincides with my decision to stop using my domperidone. I've now resumed taking domperidone but I take a little less than I did before.
Is it possible that low stomach acid has caused my irritable bowel symptoms? I've come across some research that states some cases of GERD can be successfully managed using only prokinetics like domperidone without the need for ppis. If that's the case, maybe I can reduce my ppi use. Any thoughts?
Also, I'm very interested to know if anyone has had a hiatal hernia repaired WITHOUT a Nissen Fundoplication and, if so, did it improve your symptoms? I have a 3 to 4 cm hiatal hernia and from what I've read and heard, I really don't want to undergo a fundoplication as it seems to be a case of the cure being worse than the ailment.
I'm really frustrated and very uncomfortable right now and would appreciate any advice or suggestions anyone might have.
Cheers!
