hiatal hernia PVC's

by phillys976, Apr 09, 2008 12:17AM
Hi. I do not agree with the docs answer that hiatal hernias and PVC's are not related. I am by no means a medical expert, but I have experienced it myself. Experience is the best teacher. I have had extremely bad GERD for many years. I just started a new job at a Auto shop, and on my first day I lifted a large tire high in the air. I felt a sharp pain only for a second in my lower chest. I continued working with no apparent problems. When I returned home I began having PVC's for the first time in my life. And they got really bad.  Every third beat, Tri-something they called it at the emergency room. Thought I was going to die! The doc said my blood work was fine, told me to stop drinking caffeine and sent me home. Now I am having sharp pains right below my chest bone. Feel fatigued, sick to my stomach and have headaches. The PVC's are probably somewhere around 10-15 a min, very annoying and scary. My point is, I have never had PVC's before, but believe I have a hiatal hernia that was made worse by lifting the tire. I refuse to believe it to be a coincidence that the extreme PVC's just decided to pop up after this occurrence. It is proven that most people with hiatal hernias have GERD. Anyone else have hiatal hernia and PVC's?

I have had PVC for a couple of years now. However, they are infrequent and only come about during periods of stress.

Of late i've had lots of GERD symptoms and after an upper GI my consultant said that I have a very small sliding hiatal hernia but not GERD.

So I have PVC's and a hiatal hernia, but I don't know how long i've had the hernia and if the PVC's started because of the hernia.

I played high level sports for years during my teens so I do not know if I injured myself during this time?!

Hope this helps..

Hi phillys976
I Do Have a hiatal hernia, w/GERD. Unlike most people, I do not feel indigestion or heartburn -- I have it, I just don't notice it unless I sleep with my head too low.
My symptom is heart palpitations.  I say I blew my hiatal hernia.  Too much bending over or lifting, even squatting, and I feel pressure up to my throat ... and the heart starts skipping.
I don't know if they are PVCs as I have never had them checked.  I just know that ice water and taking it easy will get things calmed back down.
I have never found a doctor, though, that believed palpitations were from hiatal hernia. But I know, because that's what brings them on.

I have been having a slew of symptoms since I was pregnant in 2006.  All my doctors said my symptoms will subside once I deliver, well my son is now almost 20 months old and I am still having lots of problems.  Went to my cardio today for a stress echo and I got a clean bill of health in terms of my heart.  I was told it is ALL related to the fact I have a hiatal hernia and GERD.  I have a previous post on here if you want to check out all my symptoms and tests I have had done.  Apparently if the hiatal hernia is really bad it can put "stress" on your heart to the point it cause "heart" symptoms.  I asked if this is a concern and I was told no.  I am at a loss too.  I wish you lots of luck!!

Have endured this for many years and can no longer work physically because of what happens (SVT's) Have hiatus hernia with reflux and generalised gastro intestinal problems and the SVT always start when I have had prolonged periods of stress and era triggered by movement - reaching up (lifting like you did) is very uncomfortable in my sternum area and I am sure to get a SVT during or shortly afterwards. Twisting and bending are the same. There is DEFINATELY A CONNECTION. Try to find and older doctor with more experience. good luck

I do not have hiatal hernia that I know of (upper GI endoscopy is scheduled for May) but I was recently diagnosed with LPR (silent reflux).  My journey to finally getting this DX began a couple years ago with heart symptoms (palpatations, chest pressure and tachycardia, breathing difficulties).  I never had any heartburn.  All the heart tests that I've had done have come back fine.  I am convinced there is a connection between the palpatations and the reflux.  I googled it and found a lot of reflux sufferers also have palpatations.  I've also read that reflux can cause issues with the vagus nerve which may produce heart and blood pressure symptoms.  Good luck in finding your answers.
