is it really acid reflux or something more?

i am asking this out of concern for my husband.  for the past 4 or 5 months, after he would eat dinner, he would get a choking feeling in his throat and if felt like his food was not going down.  this was a constant occurance everyday and soon progressed to each and every meal. a month ago he started waking every hour on the hour gagging and trying to vomit because he felt food caught in his throat. he went to the doc last week and she put him on acid reflux meds and told him to come back this coming friday. the first few days he was on the pill he seemed to be doing better, but by day 4 he was back to the same thing. now he can barely swallow and even when he doesnt eat at all, he has a constant "tickle" in his throat. now he tells me that he is having some trouble breathing and taking deep breaths. anyone out there have the same thing? could he actually choke in the night. im very concerned.

It is possible he may have something in addition to GERD, but u said he responded the first few days....so it could be just GERD.

I would ask for a different med.....I was taking a GERD med I had taken over the yrs and it just stopped working for me......nor knowing what he was on I can tell u there r diff types of meds......PPI or proton pump inhibitors and HII (H2) Histamine blockers.......ask the dr if trying a diff med could help.

Also, I would imagine that the dr also told u to watch his diet.......and there r lifestyle changes as well....we have a list in out Health Pages here on MedHelp.
