I was prescribed it following problems swallowing, I had a gastroscopy where they used a camera to look down my throat to my stomach but they found no problems. During the investigation the consultant did note acid reflux though which is why they gave it to me. I took it for a while but it had no effect on me so I stopped. I would advise another trip to your doctor if you are worried.
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor and doesn't treat anything. It 'treats' your stomach acid pump by preventing it to work properly, and that's it.
As it turned out, it absorbs into the blood much better on an empty stomach, then on a full one. When taken on an empty stomach, a much smaller dose is needed to achieve the desired level of inhibition.
You need to take it about 1/2 hour before a major meal, at least that is what I was told. Taking it after a meal is just making expensive urine, it does no good at all.
I only ever had heart burn occasionally. I went to the doc with lower back pack constant belching and a pain in my side of my stomach and she said could be acid reflux and inflamed bowels. Gave me omeprazole
I had belching all the time on omeprazole. It never treated that symptom. I have quit omeprazole and am now retesting for h pylori and am awaiting gallbladder tests as well. A dr should always investigate reflux that does not respond entirely to omeprazole.
I did a soft, slow cooked soup diet for three to four days then I moved into a regular gerd friendly diet where I eat something just about every one to two hours until dinner and after dinner no food or snacks unless it is an apple snack. I use apples as needed to treat any indigestion or heartburn when I am busy or whatever.
I take hcl betaine before high protein meals and that has wiped out the heartburn issye itself. The only time I get heartburn nowis if I gulp down cold water or if I simply do not eat frequently enough. But again if you are busy an apple snack should help.
Yeah it said with food or empty stomach. Also are these gut pains normal did you hVe them constantly? I'm starting to worry I have gastric cancer and I'm only 25:(
My understanding is that it should be taken on an empty stomach, at least half an hour before food. This helps to cut down the amount of acid produced in the stomach which is why it should be taken before food. When I used to take it I took it morning and evening, but always on an empty stomach.
Ps Do you not have an instruction leaflet with your medication?
