Zantac is helpful.  150mg twice daily for a month or so. Then as needed. Google foods to avoid because there are a ton of foods that aggrevate. He should see a doctor though if he has the means to do so to be certain there isn't a bigger problem.

Actually milk isn't a good intervention because it has protein in it . This causes more gastric acid to be secreted to break down the protein.

I thought the diff b/w stomach ulcer and acid reflux is - the former hurts before or during eating, the latter hurts after eating; the former wakes you up at night, the latter keeps you from sleeping; the former response well to antacid, the latter is better to use apple cider vinegar.

These are all excepted from hearsays.  Are they not correct?

The major symptom of an ulcer is a burning or gnawing feeling in the stomach area that lasts between 30 minutes and 3 hours. This pain is often interpreted as heartburn, indigestion or hunger. The pain usually occurs in the upper abdomen, but sometimes it may occur below the breastbone. In some individuals the pain occurs immediately after eating. In other individuals, the pain may not occur until hours after eating. The pain frequently awakens the person at night. Weeks of pain may be followed by weeks of not having pain. Pain can be relieved by drinking milk, eating, resting, or taking antacids.
Appetite and weight loss are other symptoms. Persons with duodenal ulcers may experience weight gain because the persons eats more to ease discomfort. Recurrent vomiting, blood in the stool and anemia are other symptoms.

My situation is as follows: I have had GERD since 1994.  I have been on several medications. In most recent years I have been taking omeprazole. I think it's been helping over the years but I now have some symptoms that seem different.  Almost 4 years ago I had a peptic ulcer. It was rather small. My gastro doctor did a follow up endoscopy about 8 weeks later and all was clear. I was using omeprazole to clear the ulcer.  Fast forward to now. I have the following symptoms.  Lumpy throat (on and off) very short like pinch sensation lower esophagus (on and off)  Upper abdominal stomach "raw" type ache on the left and right side - happened twice recently. Occasional heartburn and really bad foul smelling flatulence.  I did have a ultrasound done on my gallbladder over 5 years ago and it confirmed that I have gallbladder sludge - a little achy there (on and off too). Very concerned.  My doctor said to take omeprazole for 1 month twice a day and if the symptoms don't improve he'll do an endoscopy.  I was eating Activia yogurt for a couple of weeks thinking it would help my gut.  That's when I felt the abdominal pain - so I stopped eating that.  Anyone have similar symptoms?  The occasional pinching feeling worries me.  Maybe an ulcer, h pylori?  Unfortunately when you think the worst the  anxiety doesn't help GERD symptoms.  Any thoughts would be helpful.  I see my doctor May 18th.
