upper endoscopy celiac reflux

I have been suffering with bad reflux for over 3 years now. I have had alot of different blood tests and a colonoscopy. They cant seem to find the cause of this reflux and this abdominal pain. Recently i thought maybe lactose-intolerance(unlikeley i think) or gluten intolerance/celiac desease(more likely). I brought this up[ and my gastro doc said he did a celiac test and eliminated that early on. I am having an endoscopy done next week to check for bacteria in the stomach and just to see if they can find anything. When they do an endoscopy is celiac something that is always checked for?....or since he seems to think thats not the case could he just not test for that...?...thanks

If he is doing an upper endoscopy, he definitely needs to check you out for damaged villi too.  My MD is still not thrilled with the lab tests and does not think they catch all cases.  But if your villi are damaged, that's definitive.

Even if there was no damage, if no other cause of reflux is found, you could still experiment by eliminating first milk and then gluten.  I will say that my friend who had heartburn as her only sign of Celiac disease (but had major Celiac damage showing on upper endoscopy), she was on the gluten-free diet for about 2 months before she stopped having heartburn.  It was rough.

Damaged villi are probably the main thing he would be looking for, but if it's convenient, you could still mention your concern about Celiac.

The physician will see any abnormalities during the endoscopy, so I don't think there is a need to mention the Celiac's.

I will agree with the above poster that not all cases of Celiac's disease are detected via lab draw.

so, do u think that i should mention this again when i go in for the endoscopy or do doctors test for damaged villi automatically when they do an upper endoscopy.
