Bed side manner:)

First let me tell you about me, I am 32, I have two kids both were C-Section baby's. At 27 I was treated and diagnosed for Endometrious. At that point I was happy for the surgery and I had the best OBGYN a girl could ask for. I still think he saved my life. Not life as I was dying but just my day to day life. Dr. Martin is a great doctor. 6 months after he removed all or most of the Endometrious I was back in his office, same symptoms same pain same everything. This time I came prepared with a pro and cons list of a hysterectomy, now remember I was in my 20's. I was devorced with two boys. And I had my tubes tide when my youngest was born. Needless to say that Dr. Martin again saved me. He preformed two surgerys in me in about a years time. Both times he always treated me as thought I was the only patient he had. He came to see me before and again after surgery. Always updated me on what he saw and in short why he did. The rest we talked about at my post opp visit.

So now I moved away from my awesome doctor, and maybe he spoiled me. But I just had gallbladder removed do to it not working right. My hida scan results showed a flow of 16, and 35 is the lowest they want it to be. I was in a great deal of pain not to mention a lot of other problems. My doctor recommended a sergion for me. First impression was that I like this guy.  But as I walked out if his office for my pre opp visits were I spent less than 5 mins in, I thought this guy didn't check my lungs or ears, nose. Nothing. He did no exam. He scheduled my surgery and the next time I saw him was for about 30 secs before surgery. And do to past experience I Assumed he would stop in after words and tell me about how it went. Nope didn't show. I asked the nurse and she said I would see him at the post opp appointment?! To me this seems rude and strange. This guy is nice but boy he just is not very good at explaining things, nor did I have to do a bowel cleanse the night before. As I have had to do in the past. The instructions for this surgery was, well that there was none. Nobody brought in a breathing thing to help me take deep breaths to avoid  pneumonia. I have been taking deep breaths on my own only because I new to do so. I feel that this last surgery and lack of information could lead up to someone having serious side effects and complications. Or was i spoiled before by have such a great doctor in the past? No I do not think I was spoiled, I believe that Dr. Martin was exactly how a great doctor should be. And this other doctor is an example of what not to be. But what do you think??

First I would like to thank you for your response. And I want to say that Dr. Beutler is a nice guy. I had mentioned above that during my first visit with him I liked him. I didn't how ever mention that I am a self pay patient. Meaning no insurance. Not that this should be important or have anything to do with the care I may or may not have recieved. And I also want to give this doctor a huge thumbs up, he not only performed this surgery for me but he only charged me a flat 500 bucks. That includes the first pre opp, surgery, and my follow up. This man I believe became a doctor for all the right reasons. My concern was that I hope he didn't disregard any important steps along the way because I didn't have insurance. Not saying that he or the hospital staff did. Because I was treated very well during my short stay. I don't know a surgeon that would not only cut payment in half but then to cut it in half again shows he is a caring man. I had no infection or life threatening emergency that required me to have my gallbladder out ASAP. Just not working as it should.

I guess what got to me the most was that he didn't come talk to me after the surgery, something I didn't even think to ask about, because in the past the doctor always stopped in to talk to me.

I wanted to clear up any misunderstanding that I didn't like this doctor or that I felt I wasnt treated well. Because minus him not filling me in on the process, this man is an angel. Again thank you for your response.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
First, I hope you are doing well after the surgery and that it takes care of your problem.

Medicine has become a very competitive field. It is no longer goog enough to be excellent technically as a surgeon. It is all about relations. If the patient is not comfortable with the decision for surgery they should either request another appointment to have their remaining questions answered or seek another opinion. There are  roughly thirty General Surgeons in my town and I think they are all good surgeons. Some will click with a patient and some won't but all stay pretty busy. Surgeons that I don't get along very well with have patients that love them and vice versa.

As for bowel prep, it is not indicated for gallbladder surgery. Because diets are typically low fiber as they are re-advanced post op it would result in a higher rate of uncomfortable post op constipation. As for the incentive spirometer, these are usually distributed per hospital policy rather than physician preference so I wouldn't blame the specific physician.

I do agree that good pre op education helps to head off problems post op. we have made it our routine to have our nurses contact patients a day or two before their procedures to gonover instructions again and answer any remaining questions. This has significantly reduced the preventable post op issues.

I would point out that this was a referral from a primary care physician. As a specialist, we need to make our referring docs look good in the patients' eyes. We want the patient to return to their docs and thank them for the referral to us. If service was below expectations mention it to the physician that referred you. If will help him to keep his patients satisfied in the future.
