The HCG drops are usually started on low carbohydrate diet which is believed to actually cause weight loss rather than the hormone. Also little is known about the efficacy or the safety of the drug; since there is no valid market research available yet. AMA and the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition warns that hCG is neither safe, nor effective as a weight-loss aid. Common side effects include irritability, headaches, mood swings, blood clots and hormone changes, ovarian hyperstimulation, irregular bleeding etc. Still if one is willing to go ahead with it, it is best taken under medical supervision.
