6mp

6mp

My husband was taking 6mp for 2 years for Crohnes disease.  He stopped taking it as of January 1, 2004 and feels great.  I would like to get pregnant as soon as possible.  Is there any risk to the baby even though he has been off the medicine for 45 days?  Is the medicine out of his system?  Should we wait longer before trying to have a baby?  Also could the 6mp cause a low sperm count even though he is off the medicine now?

According to my drug reference, the half-life of 6 mercaptopurine is very short - on the order of hours.  If he has been off the medication for 45 days, it is unlikely that any adverse effect will be caused by the medication.

I am unaware of this medication causing a low sperm count, although these questions should be discussed with your personal physician.  A sperm analysis can be discussed if this is a continued concern.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
