A QUESTION ON A CURE FOR GESTROESOPHAGEAL REFLUX DISEASE

I was told that taking a prokenitic agent will tighten the
lower esophageal spincter. Is this a cure for GERD? Does the
LES stay tightened after the medication is stopped or will there
be a relapse of the LES becoming loose again with reflux
symptoms returning? Also how long can reflux meds. be safely
  taken? Thank You
     Cathy
Dear Cathy,
Gastroesophageal reflux disease is a chronic condition characterized by remissions and exacerbations. Unfortunately, although prokinetic agents such as cisapride (Propulsid) work by tightening the LES and by accelerating gastric emptying these effects occur only as long as the drug remains in the body. Long term use of cisapride is considered safe except in patients taking drugs such as certain antibiotics, antihistamines and antifungal agents or in patients with underlying heart disease and dysrhythmias. I hope you find this information helpful.
