Absence of reflex

Absence of reflex

I realize that this question may overlap into neurology, but recently, when examined by a Gastroenterologist for fecal incontinence, she noted the absence of a "wink" reflex.  What is the significance of this observation when there have been a variety of neurologic problems over the past 3 years including episodes of numbness/tingling and or pain in extremities and face?  I am only 42, not diabetic, and after evoked potentials and MRIs 2 years ago, neurologist felt that he had ruled out MS.  The only other possible cause could be an accident about 3 years ago.  As a final question, is this lack of reflex and related incontinence irreversible?

Dear Deb,
The external rectal sphincter is can contract after digital examination.  In order to assess causes for incontinence, it is necessary to undergo formal anal rectal mannometry that includes measurement of internal and external sphincter pressures, the sphincter response to ballon dilation in the rectum and a continence test.  These tests are often offered by a gastroenterologist or a colorectal surgeon.

Incontinence can result from childbirth or rectal trauma in addition to conditions that affect the spinal nerves.
