Ammonia??????????????

  
  My son plays baseball.  Recently, his coaches decided he had gotten too hot
  and dehydrated during a game.  They gave him liquids and....get this.......
  saturated a towel with ammonia, put it over his head, i.e. a tent, and had him breathe
  in this "tent" for several minutes.
  Is this a reasonable thing?  Is this appropriate??  My son is 15 years old, tall and lanky.
  His pulse began to race, he felt lightheaded and dizzy, and nauseous.  They wanted to DO IT AGAIN!!
  My son refused.  He was pulled from play, because of his physical condition;
   and consequently missed the next day of school also because of his physical condition.
  I do not understand..........please help.......I may not even be in the correct category.
  Is this a normal thing to do...it certainly did not seem so to me!
