Anismus and Botox

Several questions about an October 1998 posting:

~ Has there been any update to this year-old information about the affect of botox on anismus?

~ Where can one find the literature quoted in this arhcive posting, so I can refer my gastroenterologist to this?

Here is last year's posting; thank you.

: I have been diagnosed with Paradoxical Puborectalis / Anismus and was told that biofeedback was the only treatment. I have been through 12 sessions without any type of change in my BM. I have heard about a new treatment involving injections of Botulim type A. Any info on this would be great. Also I would like to hear from any other people who have been diagnosed with Anismus / PP.

Dear AM,
Aliterature search regarding the use of Botulinum toxin for the treatment of constipation yielded little information. There is a case report of a patient with Oparkinson's Disease and severe constipation who had improvement with BoTox. REgarding the use of Botox for Anismus, there was 1 study (uncontrolled) that reported the results of 4 treated patients. There was improvement in symptoms and 2 patients had a prolonged effect (3-12 months).

This information is presented for educational purposes. Always consult with your personal physician for specific medical questions.

If you want to obtain a second opinion regarding the utility of this treatment, I suugest that you arrange an appoinment with Dr. Eggenburger of our Division of Colorecxtal Surgery. You can arrange an appoinmetn with him by calling our Physician Referral Line at (800) 653-6568.

nothing to add at this time.  To find the article mentioned in the posting, it would be necessary to go to the National medical Library (Medline) and do a search using the keywords of botilinum toxin and rectum
