Bi-Carb Formula for GERD

  I have been diagnosed with acid reflux.  It is so bad it is causing
  heart palpitations (I have MVP and get pvcs and SVT).  I
  have tried Zantac, Pepsid, Tagamet (they all give me palpitations).
  I've also tried Prilosec and Prevacid (I reacted allergically
  to both these meds, however, they helped me tremendously. Prepulsid
  causes me to go into SVT.  I've had all the heart tests and
  stomach diagnostic tests to rule out more serious stomach and
  heart problems.  My family doctor told me to try Vital Life
  Bi-Carb formula (sodium bicarbonate and potassium bicarbonate)
  for the reflux.  How does baking soda and potassium bicarb
  neutralize stomach acid.  I took some today and it seemed to
  give me gas (belching).  Is this a natural remedy for acid
  reflux?  Thanks

The bicarbonate 9 base) in baking soda neutralizes the refluxed acid.  The chemical reaction results in the production of carbon dioxide gas, hence the burping.  You may consider taking other buffers to determine if they are as effective incotrolling symptoms but cause less gas.  Try liquid antacids such as maalox, mylanta or Amphogel.
