Blood in Stool

Blood in Stool

Hello,

I am a 35 year old male, no family history of colon cancer, 6'2", 185 lbs, active, healthy eater (relatively).  For the past few months, I have suffered from itching, swelling, and irritation in and around my rectal area.  On a couple of occasions, I have noticed streaks of bright red blood on the toilet tissue following a bowel movement, which disappear after a day or two.  Topical over-the-counter cream seemed to allay the symptoms.

With the past few weeks, I have felt a bit constipated, though fiber supplements and increased H20 (and on one occasion, an ex-lax tablet), always seem to get me moving in the right direction.

Earlier this week, after a bowel movement, I thought I saw a small amount blood in the "crevices" of my feces.  I have now diagnosed myself with colon cancer and am experiencing a lot of angst and worry.  Again, the amount of blood was small, and did not color the water in the bowl.

I have made an appointment with my family doctor, but I'm wondering if you can tell me the "odds" of colon cancer based on my description of the symptoms.  At the very least, I'd like to go into the doctor's office without trembling in fear and expecting the absolute worst.

Thanks very much,

Hemorrhoids, anal fissure, diverticulosis, infection, polyps or cancer are all possible.  The chances of colon cancer are less likely in someone your age.

Nonetheless, I would suggest a lower endoscopy to further evaluate the bleeding.  This can include either a flexible sigmoidscopy or colonoscopy.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

My boyfriend just went to the doc yesterday with this exact same complaint.  He has been told it could be hemorroids (hemorrhoids), a stomach ulcer, or colon issues, not necessarily cancer although a possibility.  Schedule your colonoscopy asap as he has now done but since there are other things it could be, try not to
self-diagnosis and worry.  Only worry when you have the facts.  Speculation itself can cause an ulcer :)  I wish you the best, please post when you know!  Good luck.

You're pretty young... I'm sure it is just internal hemmorhoids....

IBD or hemorroids (hemorrhoids)... See your doc about a colonscopy.
