Bowel problems

I am a 52 year old woman. I am overweight with controlled hypertension and otherwise always good health. I had normal complete blood work 6 months ago during my annual physical. I have not yet had a colonoscopy but at my last visit we talked about it and I said I would consider it this time. I take antenolol, vitamins, soy and estroven(over the counter for menopausal sx)and tylenol PM at night. I have a hx of hemmorrhoids from when I had my first child thirty two years ago. they are both internal and external. occassionally, over the years they have been bothersome with pain or slight bleeding. Four days ago after a bowel movement which was normal I had blood in the toilet. It was not in the stool but was a moderate amount. No pain involved. I have been having feelings that I need to go when I don't or I only would go a small amount. at times I may strain a bit. Sometimes the stools are soft and small other times the normal size. when I applied some "tucks" with whitch hazel the hemmoiroids felt better and the feeling that i needed to go was gone. I have not had any blood since and the stools are light brown to dark brown. I am very anxious which I am sure may contribute to my problem. My brother died of prostrate cancer at age 32. I have an appointment with my Primary care Dr. on 6/2. Do you think this is serious?  I would appreciate any comments.

I can't comment on whether it is serious or not without examination.  However, any blood in the toilet is not normal - and requires a colonoscopy after the age of 50 for further evaluation.  

Things like hemorrhoids or anal fissures are possible, but you don't want to miss any cancer or polyps.  It is very likely that your PCP will schedule a colonoscopy - if not, you should definitely push for one.  

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
