Breathalyzer

Hi doc,

got your response yesterday, thanks so much, I think you are probably right about the malabsorption issue whether it being SIBO and or lactose intolerant, But I live in Tampa florida an I have checked with all the Gastros here in this area  and none of the nurses in the offices have a clue what I am talking about??  Is this breathalyzer in the office or usually done in a lab??

Still awaiting for test results from biopsy and endoscopy, but do not think they test for SIBO?

I think I am going to wait on the HIDA scan, my stools have food, but not fat and don't really have pain

thanks for any more information you can provide?

Can I just have my Doc treat for SIBO and see if I get better?? If so what would you treat with??

thanks, Des

The breath tests for lactose intolerance is known as the lactose breath hydrogen test.  The one for bacterial overgrown is officially called the [14C]-d-xylose breath test.

Both can be discussed with a GI physician, most likely at an academic medical center.

No, the biopsy nor the endoscopy is not diagnosed for bacterial overgrowth.

There are a variety of antibiotic regimens for treatment, including the combination of Augmentin and Flagyl or Rifaximin alone, among others.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.
