Can food poisoning cause appendicitis?

Would like to know whether a person who has contracted e. coli can develop appendicitis as a result of the food borne illness?  E. coli symptoms manifested within approximately 24 hours after eating a hamburger.  About three weeks later, this woman, who is an insulin dependent diabetic 27 year old, had to have her appendix removed.  Claimed it was due to the food borne illness...  Causal relationship?  Medical possibility?

Did she say her doctor told her that, or is it her own theory? I'm certainly no doctor but it actually sounds plausible to me. Appendicitis is simply inflammation of the appendix, which is attached to the cecum, a part of the colon. Any bacterial infection which could cause inflammation inside the GI tract could easily be transferred to the appendix, I would think.
