Chronic Gastritis HELP!!!!!!!!

Chronic Gastritis HELP!!!!!!!!

I have just had a gastroscope and was diagnosed with chronic gastritis. I was given liquid Carafate to take four times a day. I've had gastritis before, but can't remember exactly what this is. Can anyone who has this tell me a little something about what the outlook is? I have heard that this could lead to cancer of the stomach. If I keep getting this, is it something that I am doing? I have no energy and I was a hyper person before all my surgeries. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

I may need help myself but I am also a nurse and I do know a little about gastritis since I have had it several times in the past.. I found the following info for you...

gastritis that occurs repeatedly or continues over a period of time. Although pain,  especially after eating,  and symptoms associated with indigestion may occur in chronic gastritis,  most patients are asymptomatic; however,  the condition may lead to hemorrhage and ulcer formation. Among its possible causes are vitamin deficiencies,  abnormalities of the gastric juice,  ulcers,  hiatus hernia,  excessive use of alcohol,  or a combination of any of these.
Chronic gastritis is treated with a bland diet; food should be taken frequently and in small amounts. Antacids or anticholinergics may also be used in moderation to minimize stomach acidity. If bleeding is a problem that cannot be controlled by conservative measures,  partial gastrectomy,  pyloroplasty,  vagotomy,  or total gastrectomy may be indicated.

I have chronic gastritis.  Seven years ago I had symptoms which the doctor said sounded like GERD.  No testing was done.  I took Prevacid for a few months, the symptoms subsided.  That was 7 yrs ago.  Four years ago I had my first scope.  Diagnosis was no GERD but mild gastritis.  Told to take Prevacid.  Did this off and on for the past three years.  Would be systematic 3-4 times a year and that's when I would take Prevacid until I felt better.  This past April, symptoms came back with a vengenence.

Went for another scope in July, diagnosis is Chronic gastritis with intestinal metaplasia.

I researched the term Intestinal metaplasia and found that technically it means a pre-cancerous condition.  If left unchecked it increases the likelihood of cancer forming there.
I met with my doctor and his definition of IM in the stomach isn't the same as IM in the esophagus.  He told me if it was in the esophagus, he would be concerned about Barretts but in the stomach, it indicates tissue changing which is not promblematic and in my case, it suggested the change was tissue healing.  I have since found that this is the case however, I am leaning towards getting a second opinion for piece of mind.

Gastritis is a lousy thing to have!  I had a terrible summer and was sick most days.  No energy like you, lost weight and was outright miserable.

I'm better now, been taking Prevacid (15 mg in the AM, 15mg in the PM).  It helps but I think the biggest help was my own "self help" and tips I received from others on this board.

Try drinking a few ounces of aloe juice in the AM and PM.  DGL tablets are good to chew before meals.  I try to eat foods that don't irritate my stomach.  I gave up coffee completely and have just begun to have an occassional glass of wine.  I don't eat any foods like tomatoe based foods, I don't eat meat (too hard to digest).  I drink lots of water and make fresh fruit smoothies for my drive to work.

How long have you had this and how were you diagnosed?

I had gastritis before in the 80s and took carafate and it went away. I just had a gastroscope done on Friday. I've had ten surgeries in two years and I've been under alot of stress aaand lots of medicine, so I'm sure this didn't help. I'm miserable and stay nauseated and tired all the time. I will be having another surgery in December.I'm having another lysis of adhesions. I'm staying away from spicy foods and that's hard to do in cajun country. I don't eat a lot of meat and drink lactaid milk. And now, we are preparing for a hurricane, so more stress. I have to have a Hida scan done to rule out gallbladder problems. That's all I need. Thanks for all the help.
