Concerns

Dr Kevin -

In the last few weeks, I noticed that I feel more constipated than normal.  I also noticed that my stools appear to be more narrow and ribbon-like.  I've had hemorrhoids before, but I also know that these symptoms are potential warning signs for colon/rectal cancer.

My family has no colon cancer history, I'm 38, never smoked and I don't eat a lot of foods with animal fats.  I am overweight though, and not as physically active as I would like (unless you count chasing three children around under age 7).

I have scheduled a colonoscopy for April 21st, but I'm starting to freak out about my symptoms.  I have no other ones than the ones I've mentioned. I feel about the same in general, but I wonder if I'm just causing myself more worry by reading all the colon cancer websites and symptoms.

My questions are (1) what is the chance that this is actually colon cancer and (2) can hemorrhoids cause narrowing of the stools and (3) should I move up my colonoscopy to an earlier date.

1) I can't give any percentages as to the chances of it being colon cancer.  Polyps, colitis or inflammatory bowel disease are also possible.  At age 38 without a familial history of colon cancer makes the chance less likely.

2) It is possible for hemorrhoids to cause a change in stool caliber.

3) April 21st is in 2 weeks.  It would be unlikely that this would make a difference, however I would discuss this with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
