Constant nausea

Constant nausea

I don't know what topic to put this under.  My boyfriend is having an awful time with nausea.  He says he is constantly nauseated, it never stops, sometimes he can't eat because he feels so sick to his stomach.  He is not on any medications, 39 yrs old, healthy.  His doctor prescribed Clidinium but it only upset his stomach more.  What on earth can be causing this?  He went to England then Poland for his work 2 months ago.  He was fine in England, but when they were in Poland it started and has been bad ever since.  Can nerves do this on a 24/7 basis?  What can he do?  He's been taking Maalox, but not helping much at all.  HELP!!!!

Dear Misty,
Nausea can result from many different causes.  Intestinal infections as well as hepatitis must be excluded, particularly in view of the recent travel history.  Next it is necessary to rule out diseases of the gastrointestinal tract as well as gastrointestinal dysmotility.  An upper GI series with small intestine seies as well as a gastric emptying study will exclude functional as well as structural abnormalities.  Neurologic as well as middle ear problems can also cause nausea.  A CT of the head and ET evaluation should be considered if initial workup is nondiagnostic and there are suggestive symptoms.
Without a specific diagnosis, therapy is limited to anti nauseas medications such as Tigan.  Specific therapy requires a definitive diagnosis.
