Digestive Enzymes 7 Crohns

Digestive Enzymes 7 Crohns

HI,

I have tested postive for Crohns through a test from my doc from prometheus labs.  Am waiting a few weeks to have a Small GI test and colonoscopy to further confirm.  I also have Hashimoto's thyroiditis for which they just removed my thryoid 2 weeks ago.  Also possible for other autoimmune adrenal issues. Have tested with low B12 in the past which has been brought up by shots and supplements.  So I have some sort of malabsorption issue.

Particularly since having my thryoid out I sense I am not digesting my food and it is contributing to worse fatigue etc.

Is it ok to take over the coutner digestive enzymes to aid digestion if you possibly have Crohns?

Also is it worthwhile to have tests to determone levels of intrinsic factor and parietal cell antibodies as well as amylase and lipase or not.

Thanks
Shelley

I am not aware of studies showing that OTC enzymes help in patients with Crohn's disease.

If there is concern about the pancreas, obtaining an amylase and lipase level, as well as imaging the pancreas can be considered.  If abnormal, and the pancreas continues to be suspected, more specific testing like the intrinsic factor and parietal cell antibodies can be considered.
