Do adhesions cause pain?

Posted By Kelly on September 06, 1998 at 18:57:33:

My husband has been having stomach pains on and off for the last
18 years. He had his appendix taken out 18 years ago. Aprox.
15 years ago he had been having pain in his upper abdomen. His
Dr. could not find the cause but because the pain was much like
the pain of Gallstones so surgery was done. There were no stones
but some sand. He felt good for approx. 14 years with some abdominal
pain (attacks) off and on. Last year the pain became regular wher
he had to be on pain medication to help ease the pain. He was
in the hospital for 3 months on IV pain medication as his stomach
not take any more. Tests were done in the hospital with all showing
normal. An exploritory surgery was done to see if there was any
problems that did not show up on the tests. The only thing the Doctors
believed to be the cause of his pain was scar tissue. My husbands
pain had completely dissapeared afer surgery and he felt great, but now
after 3 months after surgery his pain has returned and is now back
on pain medication. It always seems to be the worse after he eats.
He feels that this is because his stomach stretches and causes
his adhesions to pull. Do adhesions cause this much pain and do
they re-occur that soon after surgery. Help, what else could cause
so much pain ALL THE TIME?
