Dear sarah,
ERCP is an endoscopic procedure which involves placing a cannula (tube) in the opening of the pancreatic and/or bile duct, injecting dye into the duct and then taking X-rays to look for abnormalities e.g. bile ductstones.  ERCP has many of the am rsiks as other endoscopic tests: reaction to medication, viscus perforation, bleeding.  Unique to ERCP is the chance of developing pancreatitis, nflammation of the pancreas.  This complication occurs in less than 5% of patients undergoing ERCP.
