Elevate total bilirubim

I just had bllod work done at a health fair. Everything was normal. AST,ALT Alubumin, glogulin, Alk Phos., iron, etc all normal. the exception was total bilirubin which as 2.3, normal 02-1.2 and dircect bilirubin .4 normal is 0.0-.2. why is that? if all the other liver enzymes are fine should I be concerned?

Further evaluation can be done to ensure there isn't any biliary obstruction.

An ultrasound can be done to image the liver and gallbladder.  If there is suspicion about the biliary tree, you can consider an MRCP.

If the tests remain negative, there are benign causes of an isolated bilirubin level.  Gilbert's disease would be one cause.

These questions should be discussed with your personal physician.

Maybe you should try to ask for a refferal with a good gastroenterologist.  I would not let this go.  Make sure you make a list of questions you want to ask before you go.  Because most gastros are very busy and if you don't ask questions you will never know.
