Elevated Alk Phos

Elevated Alk Phos

My 13 year old daughter has been suffering from periodic stomach aches for at least 4 years. We have been unable to tie them to any specifc cause. The pain is a strong ache in a 4" radius of the umbilicus. The pains usually last a few hours to a day. This week, she had a bout that lasted 48 hours, relief for about 2 days and returned with a vengance for another 24 hours. Urine test was normal, x-ray was normal, blood tests were normal except for Alk Phos reads 385. The pain often has her in tears. She has not started menstruating and is otherwise in excellent health. What could it be?

dear Gail F,
The GI Forum no longer has the services of a pediatric gastroenterologist, so we can not provide a detailed explanation for the potential causes for your daughter's pain.  Consider reposting this questiuon to the Maternal_cgild forum which may be able to provide an answer.
The elevated alk phos may arise from bone, (in which case it may be normal finding)or from liver (in which case this result would be abnormal).  If your daughter has had previous alk phos studies that were normal, then this recent value requires follow-up.  A GGT is one test that will distinguish liver from bone sources for the alk phos.
This information is presented for educattional purposes only.  always consult your personal physician for specific medical questions.
