Elevated Billirubin

Elevated Billirubin

I had blood work done.  My levels for the billirubin was 275.  Should I be concerned?  What can this be from?

from what I hear, that is related to the gall bladder and sorry, I don't know what the normal ranges of those levels are.  What did the dr. say?

Those sound like international units (a number that high). You're not in the United States are you? (USA uses a lower scale for bilirubin).

I am NOT a doctor---so these are just some thoughts---

If all your other enzymes etc. are normal, then you may have something simple going on (like Gilberts Syndrome).

If your alkaline phosphatase and bilirubin are both high, you might have a biliary problem (gallbladder, gallstones, bile duct). (Like chaddy said)

Ask your doctor to see if you are G6PD deficient.
G6PD = Glucose6 Phosphate Dehydrogenase

It's a hereditary enzyme that will show up with high bilirubin counts.

Forgot to tell you that it is as simple as a blood test away.
If you test positive it only means you can't eat certain foods and take certain medicines i.e. aspirin.  It's also genetic so someone else in your family may have it...That's if you test positive.
Good luck...

When I was 8 months pregnant my doctor noted that the bilirubin in my urine was high.
It turns out, after a few tests and a bit of a panic, that I have hereditary spherocytocis.  It's where my red blood cells are spherical rather than the normal doughnut shaped.  It causes the spleen to enlarge and also causes the dark urine.

Fortunately, I have it very mildly and my daughter tested negative.

Ask your doc for an OSMATIC FRAGILITY test.
