Elevated Liver Functions

Elevated Liver Functions

Last month I had written to you about my elevated
liver function levels that appeared in my bloodwork.
On the second bloodwork done a week later (March, 10),
the SGOT=34 and SGPT=66.  My doctor was happy that the
levels were going back to normal.  He suggested
another test 3 weeks (March 29) later while I
abstained from alcohol or Tylenol.  The results of the
tests indicate SGOT=45, and SGPT=90.  The levels went
back up.  All my other liver tests, e.g., hepatitis
etc. were negative.

At this point, my doctor is not that concerned with
the current levels and he suggested another bloodwork
at the beginning of June.  He said it could be an
undetected viral infection.  He also said that if the
levels persist to be high, I will have to get an
ultrasound done to check for other possibilities.

I am worried about my high current levels.  I do not
have any pain or any discomfort right now.  I eat
healthy and am making sure that I continue to do so.
I also jog and exercise regularly (3-4 times a week).
I am 36 years old male, generally healthy, and as a
child I had jaundice.  I do suffer from allergies, and
common cold.  Since the past month, I have started
taking Liv. 52. - an herbal liver supplement.

Could you please comment on the unstable nature of my
liver function levels?  What could these elevated
levels possibly mean?  What kind of precautions I need
to take?  Do I need bloodwork done before June?

Liver enzymes can fluctuate, depending on medications, alcohol and other factors.  Lab error can also introduce some variance.

If there is concern about the slightly elevated liver enzymes, I would continue to abstain from alcohol and ensure that there are no further medications that can affect the liver function.

The hepatitis levels are a reasonable initial test.  I would also consider an abdominal ultrasound for further evaluation.

If the tests remain non-revealing, rechecking the enzymes on a periodic basis would be acceptable.

You can discuss these options with your personal physician.

I appreciate the information.  I have also started experiencing some abdominal discomfort lately and have gotten an ultrasound done.  We are waiting on the results.
