Elevated SGOT SGPT Levels

Elevated SGOT SGPT Levels

I recently underwent a physical for Life Insurance and noticed that my SGOT level was slightly elevated (39) and my SGPT level was 87.  I am currently on the prescription allergy medicine Zyrtec. Could this cause the abnormal levels?
______
Dear David,
Abnormal liver tests can occur with Zyrtec.  There are, however, several other explanations. Hepatic steatosis, deposition of fat in the liver, is probably one of the most common causes of an elevation like the one you describe.  Ingestion of alcohol, even in small amounts, can produce elevations of the SGOT and SGPT.  Hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease and metabolic diseases e.g. hemochromatosis may be considerations, depending on your age, medical history etc.
I suggest that you have your liver tests repeated monthly for several months.  Stop all alcohol even the  glass of wine with dinner, if this is part of your lifestyle.  If appropriate, consider weight loss.  If the liver tests remain elevated despite these lifestyle modifications, then you should consider seeing a hepatologist.
