Elevated SGPT, enlarged liver

Elevated SGPT, enlarged liver

Hi!

My blood test showed that i have elevated SGPT (115), and a subsequent ultrasound of my liver showed that i have an enlarged liver (18cm), with fatty changes.   I was tested for Hepatitis B and it turned out negative.  What could be the probable cause of the enlarged liver and elevated SGPT?  Is this a case of fatty liver?  What are the other possibilities?  What other tests should i do?

Fat in the liver can cause inflammation that increases your liver enzymes.  The next step is to see a gastroenterologist.  They will most likely run a lot of blood work to make sure there is nothing else in the liver going on.  If you have diabetes or high cholesterol, they may even consider doing a liver biopsy.  The only real treatment for fat in the liver is steady weight loss, which can even result in normalizing liver numbers.  Although not common, this can lead to more severe liver disease.
