Elevated alt,ggt, and Ferritin

Elevated alt,ggt, and Ferritin

In august 2000 i had a physical and all my liver function tests came back normal.  In september 2002 my lab results were as follows ggt 183, ast 51, alt 108.  My iron studies were as follows tibc 365, transferrin saturation 16 and my ferritin was 575.  In august 2004 my lab results were ggt192, alt 92, and ast 50.  All iron studies normal with the exception of ferritin which was 715.  I have been a heavy drinker for the last 4 years and i'm wondering if this could be the cause of these results.  Also is there a chance this could be cirrosis (cirrhosis) or haemochromotosis?  I'm 38 and have a pretty good build.  I've gained 30 lbs. over the last 4 years also.  I'm 6 ft 235lbs.  I'm quite nervous about this please help.

Hemochromatosis can be considered with an increased ferritin level.  I would also suggest obtaining a hepatitis screen as well as imaging the liver with an ultrasound.

If hemochromatosis is suggested, genetic testing should be done looking for the appropriate gene for the disease.  If the genetic tests come back suspicious, a liver biopsy would be needed for a definitive diagnosis.

With the elevated enzymes, I would also consider abstaining from alcohol until a cause can be found.

You may want to discuss these options with your personal physician or consider referral to a gastroenterologist.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
