Enlarged Spleen and liver biopsy

Enlarged Spleen and liver biopsy

I am a 38 yr. old female.  I first had elevated ALT 12 years ago, but didn't have it after every yearly blood test.  I recently had an ultrasound and blood work, it is elevated again, hemongiomas on liver, but doctor didn't see any signs of fatty liver on ultrasound.  The spleen is enlarged, 13.1cm.  My doctor wants me to have a liver biopsy, after reading online, I am a bit nervous about that.  What other issues are associated with an enlarged spleen and is this something that should be addressed immediately? My mother also has an enlarged spleen, 12cm, but her doctor didn't request further tests for her, could it be possible that our family had larger spleens?  Thanks for your time and reponse.

Various hematologic diseases can lead to an enlarged spleen.  Infections, amyloidosis, sarcoidosis, and other liver diseases are also possible.

Obtaining a blood count and peripheral blood smear can be done to exclude these possibilities.

Risks of a liver biopsy include bleeding and infection.  The possible complications should be discussed with your personal physician prior to undergoing the procedure.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
