Elevated liver enzymes (ALT & AST) means your liver is inflammed.  The trick is ot figure out why your liver is inflammed.  Some medications (prescription and non-prescription) can irritate the liver.  Also alcohol is bad for the liver.  So if you drink alcohol-stop.  If you are taking Tylenol-stop.  The doctors will try to rule other things out one by one by doing the Hep blood test and the Ultrasound.  There are many many types of Hepatitis and if it isn't a viral type like Hep-C it might be a non-viral type like Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis. Go to the website liverfoundation.org to learn more about different types of Hepatitis.

My doctor told me that they aren't concerned about the abnormal numbers until they are one and a half times above the normal ranges.

Right.

I have heard in the past that different labs have different ranges for these blood tests.  This could possibly have something to do with the different criteria that the doctors are telling patients.

Well, my ALP is 155.  My doctor is sending me to a biliary specialist.  I understand that an elevated ALP is indicative of bile duct disease.  Anyone have any comments?
