Fatty Liver

My CT of my abdomen showed a fatty liver.  I have enough fat every where else don't need in my liver too.  What does this mean and what are the ramifications of this.  What can I do to de-fat my liver?  Thanks.  Debbie

Go on a very low fat diet.  Do you have elevated liver enzymes?  What are your symptoms?  Pain in your right side?  Fatigue?

Thanks for your replies.  I am not overweight, very fatigued, and have right sided pain under rib plus a lot of digestive problems including a hiatel hernia, GERD, and possible Multiple Sclerosis.  I ache from head to toe and my legs are very weak.  I'm a mess.  I'm 47 years old and all of my symptoms started Oct 2001.  DebbieZ

I found out I have fatty liver about 9 months ago.  The doctor told me to read "Eat, Drink and Be Healthy by Walter Willett.  The book suggests that people should not eat hydrogenated fats.  I stopped eating them and I lost twenty pounds very easily and my liver enzymes and cholesterol went back to the normal range.  Hydrogenated fats are found in margarine and shortening and lots of packaged foods.  Read the labels.  I feel so much better!

Did you have a liver biopsy?  That is the only way to know how bad your fatty infiltration of the liver is.  Do you have steatohepatitis or nonalcoholic steatohepatitis?

I have non-alcoholic fatty live.  Haven't had a biopsy.  I have considered it since 2 years ago I tested repeatedly positive for Hepatitis C.  All follow-up tests failed to show the virus again.  Could have been a false positive.  What's your opinion on having a liver biopsy?  Thanks all.  Debbie

I had a liver biopsy done a few months ago and it is a quick and easy procedure.  They do it in the hospital bed.  Then you have to lay on your side for two hours.  That is the worst part.  Biopsy is the best way to find out exactly what is wrong with the liver.
