Fosamax

My mother takes Fosamax for Osteoporosis.  She follows all the rules in taking it, but we do have this question.  Sometimes she doesn't have 30 minutes to wait between taking the pill and eating, so she usually will skip the pill, which is counterproductive.  What risks are associated with only occasionally taking the pill before 30 minutes has elapsed?  Is it dangerous to do this, take the pill and eat before 30 minutes are up?
  Thanks

Dear Kim,
Fosamax has been shown to cause severe irritation of the esophageal mucosa if there is prolonged contact between the pill and the esophageal lining.  I assume that there is concern of increased reflux of Fosmamx into the esophagus (prolonging contact with the esophageal lining)if the pill is still in the stomach when eating begins.
