GERD

Can an endoscopy miss a diagnosis of GERD? I had an emergency
endoscopy for food lodged in my throat.  Since it was an emergency, there was no preparation for this test.   I have a lot of symptoms of GERD and wonder if this test could have missed this particularly since my stomach wasn't emptied.

There are several more tests that you can have done to see what excactly is causing you problems.  One is an esophageol motility study which measure how well your esophagus is working. (Why did food get stuck in you esophagus?).  Tube is inserted in your nose, down to your stomach and when you swallow, the pressure is measured on a machine.  You should also have a 24 hour PH study, which will measure whether and how much acid reflux you are having.  You have a tube inserted in your nose, down to your stomach, which is connected to a small computerized pack.  You push buttons everytime you eat, drink or lay down, and the tube measures the acidity of your stomach, and esophagus.  You should also have a barium swallow, (chaulky stuff) you swallow, and they x-ray your stomach as it is going down.  These test will be able to give a more accurate picture of what is happening.  Hope this might be helpful!  From one who unfortunately speaks from experience.  Good Luck!
