GGT 568?

GGT 568?

I have had elevated GGT tests for 2 years-568 in '97 & 458 in '98.  Ultrasound normal. Can moderate drinking of alcohol be responsible for such highly elevated GGT?  I had gall bladder removed 11 years ago.  70 pounds overweight.  No history of liver diseases in family.  No drugs taken with exception of occasional Advil.  Non-smoker.  Would appreciate a reply ASAP.  Thanks.

Dear Sherry,
There are several possible explanatuions for your elevated GGT.  Fat deposition in the liver, due either to being over weight or the alcohol, is one possibility.  The values, however, are higher than I usually see with just fatty liver.  Bile duct obstruction can cause these elevations, but I would expect to see an abnormal ultrasound.  Primary biliary cirrhosis is a disease, predominantly of women, that can present with an elevated GGT in the absence of other symptoms or elevations of transaminase.  Finally, there are infiltrative diseases involving the liver.
A antimitochodrial antibody, repeat liver tests, other blood tests for autoimmune disease are needed.  Ultimately, you will probably require a liver biopsy for a definitive diagnosis.
