Gasping for breath

Gasping for breath

I sometimes wake up at night unable to breathe.  Sitting up seems to give relief within a few seconds, but I'm afraid one time it won't.  Is there any danger of that? I also have bouts of extremely rapid heartbeat - also during the night. Is this related to the other problem? I'm hoping to hear that this problem is not serious, so that I won't be afraid to go to sleep.  Thank you.
Dear June,
The symptoms you describe can be due to a variety of causes, however, the first step is to rule out a cardiac (heart) or pulmonary (lung) problem. If those are ruled out, gastroesophageal reflux disease and esophagitis (inflammation of the food pipe) and anxiety or panic disorder are other possibilities. Nevertheless, I would recommend that you see your primary physician for further evaluation and testing.
