H. Pylori and nausea

  Hi again:
I'm finally coming to an end with this problem I've been having for 16 months.  I was told I have mild cronic (chronic) gastritis (too much acid but they're not sure where it's coming from) and for the fourth time in 16 months diagnosed with the H. pylori virus again.  It seems to me that either they didn't get rid of it to begin with or else why else would I have it again.  The problem is I have a hard time tolerating the drugs.  I was put on Biaxin and Flagl and Prevacid the first two times (6 days the first time and seven days the second time).  The third time Biaxin and Flagal and Losec.  After three days I was told to stop because they thought that maybe I didn't have H. pylori after all.  Now, again I was told that the blood level from June to October was quite a  bit highter and that shouldn't be and I have it again.  I still have a lot of gastro problems ( bad nausea is the worst of my problems next to the pain in my chest).  October the 10th I was put on tetricycline, Pepto Bixmo, and Flagly.  After four days I broke out in very bad hives and was told to stop again.  I'm concerned that I building antibodies to the antibiotics and eventually nothing will kill the H. pylori.  They already think it might be resistant to the antibiotics.  Is there any other combinations that they can use on an antibiotic resistant H. pylori?  I really want to get rid of it.  Drugs like Losec or Prevacid don't do much for my gastritis.  Pantoloc helped but I had side effects and had to stop (nervousness and depression).  Can you mention some drugs that could possibly help till they irradicate it.  Tums, Pepto Bismo, over the counter things don't help.   My main quetion is, what can they do with a antibiotic resistant H. pylori to get rid of it?
  Thank you.

Dear Eva,
The first step is to confirm whether or not you have eradication Helicobacter pylori. The best test to do this is with a carbon urea breath test or an upper GI endoscopy with biopsy. If you still have evidence of Helicobacter pylori infection the best treatment is to try Biaxin, Flagyl and Prevacid for at least two weeks. One week therapy is sometimes not long enough. You are correct. Resistance to Flagyl and Biaxin have been reported. The only way to treat resistant organisms is with alternative or multiple antibiotics. Therefore, it is important to treat you correctly one time. It is also important to take all the medication to enhance eradication. An alternative regimen is Biaxin, Amoxicillin and Prevacid (currently marketed as Prev-Pak). If you still have symptoms despite documentation that you have eradication Helicobacter pylori infection further work-up to exclude other causes of nausea may be needed. I hope you find this information helpful.
