  I am curious as to what symtoms (symptoms) a hiatal hernia may cause and
  why it happens?
  Could it cause excess stomach acid leading to sickness and Loss of appetite
  Could it cause chest pain, belching, burping, acididity etc
  Is the operation painfull, long or complicated
  What is the recovery time?
  Does an operation have to be carried out?

Most patients with a sliding hiatal hernia have no symptoms. On the other hand, a hiatal hernia can lead to exacerbation of gastroesophageal reflux because the normal barrier (lower esophageal sphincter) to prevent acid from refluxing back into the esophagus is distorted. The symptoms that you describe are consistent with gastroesophageal reflux disease. In patients who are refractory to medical therapy or who require continuous long-term medical therapy an operation can be performed to tighten the area of the lower esophageal sphincter and prevent reflux. During the operation called Nissen fundoplication, a portion of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophagus. This procedure can now be performed via the laparoscope minimizing the incision and recovery time. It is possible that one could be back at work within a week or two postoperatively. On the other hand, it is important to realize that every operation carries with it potential risks and complications. You should understand the rationale, risks, benefits and alternatives of any procedure or operation prior to consenting to having it performed. You may also need additional preoperative testing in order to confirm the diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease and to exclude esophageal motility disorders as the cause of your symptoms.
