Heartburn

Hi. I've been having problems with hearburn for years. Im 21 now and id say ive had problems since i was maybe 15. Lately however it seems to be worse.Anything seems to give me heartburn. I also feel a burning sendsation just below my adams apple. I take zantac and it does the job, but its a very annoying problem. Also ive had the feeling of being "fogged in" since the heartburn has gotten worse. could this be related? an answer to either question would be good.thanks

dear Chris,
I doubt a relationship between being "fogged in" and the reflux.
There are a number of lifestyle modifications that should improve you reflux symptoms
a) 3 meals; no snacks
b) do not lie down for 3-4 hrs after eating
c) avoid alcohol, fatty foods, tomato juice, chocolate and any foods that you associate with increased reflux
d) no smoking
e) chew gum or suck candies during the day but do not use peppermint or spearmint.  the increased saliva from chewing gum or candies will be rich in bicarbonate that will neutralize any refluxed acid.  additionally, the actof swallowing will clear the esophagus of acid.
f) sleep with the head of your bed elevated 6 i nches to prevent nocturnal reflux.
