Hepatitis A Vaccine

  Have any adverse reactions been attributed to the hepatitis A
  vaccine?  I know the Hep B vaccine has many listed.  My daughter
  is experiencing many of the adverse reactions possibly from HepA vaccine
  that are normally attributed to the HepB vaccine.

Dear Dale:
I read your letter with great interest.  I want to state that I took your letter very seriously and spent a considerable amount of time researching the experience with the hepatitis A vaccine.  
What I can tell you is this.  The hepatitis A vaccine has been studied in clinical trials in over 100,000 individuals and has been given to well over a million people.  The vast majority of data suggests that the vaccine is very safe.  There are side effects but these are typically mild (redness and soreness at the site, headaches, malaise) and go away after a few days.  There have been rare reports of anaphylaxis but this complication should be easily identified and is not a long term problem.  There have been numerous reports of serious neurologic symptoms and problems (encephalopathy, Guillain-Barre, multiple sclerosis).  These reports are more common in adults than children and some are similar to some of the problems reported with the hepatitis B vaccine.  The incidence of these problems, however, does not appear to be different from what might be expected in the non-vaccinated population.  For instance, if you immunize a million people with the hepatitis A vaccine, five may develop multiple sclerosis.  But if you follow a million people who were not immunized, five of them may also develop multiple sclerosis.  This is important because, millions of people all over the world have been immunized with hepatitis A and some of them will develop medical problems but that in and of itself does not mean the problem was caused by the vaccine.
