Hepatitis C and Interferon

Hi,
My husband was diagnosed with Hypatitis C this past June.  The doctor here says that the viris count is extremely high and his blood but he has minimal liver damabe.  He does experience a lot of joint pain, dry eyes and fatigue.  He was put on interferon three months ago and was told last Wednesday that the interferon is not working and would have to go on something stronger.  He had a bad experience with the interferon and had severe side effects, flue like stymptons, continued joint pain & fatigue and an inability to concentrate.  His questions is, should he 1. get a second opinion and 2. What other options does he have in terms of treatment and what are the side effects?  His doctor is a specialist but is only available on Wednesdays and has not been very informative.  Pls reply.  Thank you
