Hepatitis C and Iron

I 've known that I have chronic Hep C since 1992. Geno type 1a, viral load  is 1 million and I'm concidered a 1+ out of 4. I have never done treatment, and do not feel sick. I've been on narcodic pain meds since Nov of 2004 when I slipped and fell and knocked out 2 lumbar disks, L4- 5 and L5-S1. I had a double fusion in April of 05, and I am still in the same pain as before the surgery. As it turns out, I have a 'non-union' fusion, and plan to have it re-done on Nov 15th. My Dr wants me to take prescription Iron so he can take 2 units of blood from me, in case we need it for my surgery. I am afraid to take Iron as I know it is very hard on your liver. I take every care possible to keep my liver happy. During my 1st surgery in 04, my Dr did not have me on Iron nor did he take any units of blood from me. I did become animic for about 2-3 months after that surgery. Please let me know if I am putting more strain on my liver IF I take the Iron! Thank you!!

Taking iron in recommended doses should not have serious liver toxicity.  However, this practice is debatable, and not every physician recommends this.

If there is concern about the iron, I would obtain an opinion from another physician, or a consult with a hematologist.
