High GGT Level-Dylantin

High GGT Level-Dylantin

I've been on Dylantin for the last 9 years.  My GGT levels are now at 450. The rest of the liver measurements are normal.  I feel physically very well.  I am a very moderate social drinker.  I am considering merging to LAMICTAL due to the high GGT count, supposedly because it is less harmful to my liver.  Do you think it will help to bring down that count?  Is it possible to bring it back to normal levels?  I take Glucosamine daily.

Dilantin can certainly cause an elevation in liver enzymes - including GGT.  However, you also want to ensure that the GGT is indeed coming from the liver.  The diseases of the gallbladder and pancreas can also elevated GGT.

I would abstain from alcohol and recheck the enzymes to see if the GGT goes down.  Basic tests for liver disease, such as an ultrasound an hepatitis screen should be considered.

Although Lamictal has a lower degree of hepatitis than Dilantin, it is still possible.  If all the other tests are negative, switching to this medication may be reasonable.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
